New York – the city that does not sleep, as the song says it is called “concrete jungle”. It’s a place where you can find everything: from restaurants, theatre, musicals, parks, entertainment and even the beach. A very loud city full of life, colours but not nature colours, but colours of screens with advertising – or you love it or you hate it.
My life and my work brought me to the USA. I live outside of NYC and wanted to share this new experience with you. Then?! What does Ida do in NYC? That’s all I’ve done since I’m here 🙂
The first time I went we have seen Empire State Building and i did not like it at all!! When I saw it in the movie I said I must go there it looks so cool. My best friend recommended me to go to Rockefeller Center (and she was right! My bestie i love you so much.) Thank you Fede <3
The time was running and it was very hot we decided to take a boat trip to the famous Statue of Liberty. When I saw the amount of people on the island I did not want to get off the boat and i was screaming inside “run away” (I hate crowded places) but I told to myself ill do it once. The statue is most famous symbol of NYC where you can find the phrase “Freedom Illuminates the World” its a gift of French people. The inauguration took place in 1886 and the state measures 46 meters high (93 with base). The sensation when you are under the statue is “strange” you feel small and above you stands a giant.
You can walk around but I sat down to watch people and wait for colleagues from there the view towards Manhattan is amazing. It was time for reflect and some planning where we should go after. We decided that we will go to see 9/11 Memorial then continue to Wall Street to see the famous bull and Brooklyn Bridge. The day for us was very intense and to finish it we ended up at Time Square for dinner. It was crazy busy lots of young people, adults, new yorkers and tourists. Every time i go there its busy and the positive vibe makes you happy and gives you a lot of energy. I should say “If I do not sleep, no one sleeps NYC” for us the day came to an end. Tired we went back to Grand Central Station to take the train home.
With my second visit to the big apple I had more time to see things and actually enjoy it.
I started from Central Park i though it was smaller but after after 2h I needed a break hiding myself in the Metropolitan Museum of Art 🙂 what i like about it was you pay what you think is right (yes there is suggested price). I think that is a beautiful idea so we can all afford an art lesson. The museum itself is divided into several rooms: Europe, Egypt, Asia, Africa, Oceania etc. My favourite room was Oceania maybe because of this that this part of the world attracts me a lot. Inside you find the musical instruments that have a bit of human form. Looking like giants – tribes used them to communicate and play the music. There were so many interesting things, I could have stay there all day. In addition to that I had the opportunity to see the temporary exhibition of a fashion designer Rei Kawakubo (have a look at the pictures). Together with Oceania my favourite part of the museum was photography exhibition i just love it. You probably notice how crazy i am about pictures 🙂 Fully inspired i decide to go back to the park and try to see it in a different eye if you know what i mean not just doing touristy things but checking the architecture so different in many buildings.
NYC is famous from its shopping, food markets and many shows. at the beginning. mention you about the Empire State Building but did i mention how much i love Rockefeller Centre? In my opinion it is the most romantic place in NYC the Top of the Rock is very high on my list. The view from the top is just breathtaking all the city lights a warm wind on you skin and this light breeze. It was magical there was something special about this place and i will remember it for a long time. What is a Rockefeller Centre? It’s a complex of commercial buildings to be precise 19 in total covering 22 acres and has 70 floors. Remember the famous photo of 11 workers seated on a metal hanging beam 800 meters high? The picture is called “Lunch Atop at Skyscraper” and the photo was taken right there.
many things in NYC but if you ask me what I like, I’ll tell you Rockefeller Centre!!
It was getting late and it was time for us to head towards our hotel we had a long day behind us and another day ahead.
By doing my research about Brooklyn Bridge asking my friends what is the best time to go i was told the early morning is the best time so you can actually take pictures and enjoy it yourself. I knew it wont happen for us going to Brooklyn at 7am while we got to the hotel at 1am. Hmmm well i guess we need to do it the other time. We arrived to Brooklyn a bit later then expected. The Brooklyn Bridge was the first built in steel and for a long time has been the largest suspended bridge in the world! I had time to walk across it but didn’t have time to explore Brooklyn which i regret a lot. Many restaurants, art shops and places to hang out. Well NYC you are too big to explore you in few times. If you are doing it for the first time just like me its better if you bona walk it instead of cycling. People are stopping constantly taking pictures and i guarantee you you gonna want to do the same yourself! Leave the idea of cycling it for the second time and just explore it. I had booked a free walking tour with a guided of Chinatown, Little Italy and SoHo. Three beautiful areas full of life, restaurants, music, shopping and art galleries.
Chinatown in New York is the largest in the United States. There is the largest Chinese population 70,000 – 150,000 inhabitants. The people began to come here in 1830 in job search. Many have come only to earn money and then return to their country others have remained. Many of them started to working in clothing factories or in the tobacco industry. This communities were so untied, helping each other till the point that they lived in 5 to 15 people in 2 rooms. This was their union a small but big family.
Buildings in this area were built in the 18th/19th century. When you walk in the neighbourhood you will find stands with fresh fruit and vegetables from all over the world. You can find beauty products, restaurants and replicas of famous brands (I mean bags, watches etc). You will find everything you need from the massage, hair salon, food and typical Chinese natural pharmacies. They can live in this neighbourhood without going anywhere else.
If you venture into the area try to find Columbus Park where Chinese people play cards, play on the instruments ecc. Try and go through it you will feel like in China.
Little Italy is the area in Lower Manhattan where big community of Italians lived. In 1880 many Italians came to NYC and began their new life. They have started to open their restaurants, markets whit typical products, tailor made clothes not just for wealthy people but for mafia too. In 1910 Little Italy had more than 10,000 inhabitants! After the Second World War, people began to move to other areas.
SoHo – “South of Houston Street” at the time it was the part of city where nobody wanted to live, a poor neighbourhood where there were rumors that in some of the houses there are ghosts. They have shot a lot of movies you gonna ask me why just go and check the area yourself the amazing architecture tells it all. In the area there are about 500 buildings and more or less 250 located in soho have been listed on the “Cast Iron Historic District” . It was the neighbourhood full of public houses, so called “red light district” but at the same time a place where you could by porcelain, glasses or have your books printed. In 1960 the neighbourhood began to attract the famous thanks to the building with tall sophists, large windows and plenty of space and day light . Now in Lower Manhattan there are many art galleries and houses of actors, models and singers. If you like shopping but not like big brands but independent places its a must to visit!
We walked so much and we needed some energy a bit of sugar in our blood. If you follow my blog I think you known me a bit;) and you know I like fashion in general and I like to eat 🙂 maybe I’m crazy but I did my research about the black ice cream that everyone is so excited so of course I had to try it 🙂 I have arrived at the ice cream shop and guess what?! I find people waiting in a line?! I’m like a line for an ice cream? no way i cant believe that!! i hate lines i hate waiting thats the only thing that makes me angry waiting but well i think i don’t have a choice i need to wait. My advice if it’s hot in NYC eat it inside don’t take it out if you don’t want it to melt. (The ice cream is called black coconut ash 🙂 I went out to take some photos and send the black kisses to all my followers 🙂
Full of energy we decided to venture to the High Line. Whats a High Line? Simply the railroad that is raised above the road level. Thanks to this railroad meat products, milk and many other products could come without delay to the destination. In the 1950s and 60s the railway was disused. In 1999 HL’s owner decided to turn it into something. It turn into park to remember the importance of railways in the past years. As you walk you will see the rails where plants, trees and bushes are growing. It’s a place where you can come and read your favourite book, listen to concerts or do the morning meditation. In the park, nature meets skyscrapers. Try to be like now of locals bring you own salad have a quick lunch and later continue to your next destination. If you are not in rush just sit down and relax, enjoy the life and the moment.
For me it was time to return home and get ready for another day. Here I am back to the Grand Central where i start my journey every time i go to NY.
